Attracting hummingbirds: a two-pronged approach

I don't quite remember when my hummingbirds showed up, but for several weeks I have added "hummingbird watching" to my morning routine. I hung three feeders this year. One is visible through my kitchen windows and it turns out to be the birds' favorite. At first the hummers fed strictly from the nectar feeder, but now they are sipping nectar from my 'Indigo Spires' Salvia. Nothing makes a gardener happier than knowing her plants selected for their hummingbird and butterfly attracting qualities are effectively doing their job!

Thanks to my trusty Birds of Texas Field Guide, I've identified my hummingbirds as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) and the Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri).

I've tried to get some good shots of these little guys, but they have serious "camera radar". Every time I lift my camera they buzzzzzzzz off!

Do you have hummingbirds in your garden? Leave a comment and tell me about them!
