Is there school garden project in Dallas?
One of my dreams is to set up a school garden program here in Dallas. Gardens would be design and built by volunteers and then tended by school students with supervision from additional volunteers. This would be a great way for Master Gardeners to get in their volunteer hours... Does anyone know of an existing program here in Dallas? Or, do you know who I might need to contact to get something like this going? I was re-inspired by a similar program that is going on now in Houston.

Re: School garden project
I know that Stonewall Jackson Elementary has some type of garden program. They grow herbs and have a greenhouse, although I'm not sure if they grow vegetables. You can look at the DISD website for more information.

Hi! I found your page through Gardening in Texas - Garden Web. Just a quick referral about school gardens. Check out the native plant garden at Valley Creek Elementary in McKinney on ElDorado Pkwy - west of Highway 75. Also, Leadership Allen just installed a native plant garden at Norton Elementary in Allen. Vaughan Elementary in Allen has a native plant garden and two wildflower meadows across the street in the city's greenbelt area that the students planted about 10 years ago. Adult volunteers assist the students in keeping them maintained. There are also environmental clubs at both of these schools that help with the maintence and utilize them as a part of their club activities.
Check with your facilities person with your school district to get approval for a school garden and also the principal of the school. The biggest factor in starting a school garden is the responsibility of ongoing maintenance. The school districts usually don't want to have to pay someone extra to care for the gardens.
